Who we are

Spanish Storytimes started in 2002 when
Cheryl Unzueta (see photo) was
searching central Ohio for
Spanish-language activities for her three
bilingual children.  She found none, so
after attending an English storytime at
her local public library (Upper Arlington),
she inquired if they would allow her to
present something similar, but in Spanish.
The turn-out to this inaugural event was
amazing, above and beyond what Cheryl
or librarians had expected.

Cheryl continued offering monthly
storytimes at the Upper Arlington Public
Library; word spread quickly, and other
neighboring libraries requested to host
Spanish Storytime events.  Soon, it was
too much for Cheryl to handle "sola."
Today, Spanish Storytimes, Inc is
comprised of a talented team of bilingual
professionals who have tremendous
enthusiasm and love for children's
literature.  As a team, their mission is to
promote and maintain Spanish language
and literacy throughout central Ohio.

In 2006, Spanish Storytimes was awarded
tax-exempt/non-profit status; it  now
engages more than 5,000 individuals
annually.
Cheryl Unzueta has a Master's degree in Latin
American Literature and is a certified Project
Management Professional (PMP). She is a bilingual
mother of three. Cheryl is from New York and has
lived in Venezuela and Colombia.
María Isabel Bernal has been presenting Spanish
Storytime sessions since 2007.  María Isabel is a
native of México and a bilingual mother of two.
